Many commercial buildings are made of precast, a porous material with a composition of sand, gravel and crushed stone held together by cement. A precast panel was sealed on the left with Presto Restoration's Leachstop® silicone sealer the day before. Water was applied to both sides to demonstrate the effectiveness of the protection. The left side demonstrates how precast protected with LeachStop® repels water and remains protected from damaging elements. The right side shows how water soaks into the unprotected precast and darkens it, also allowing dirt, pollution and contaminants into the pores of the precast. After cleaning and/or restoration of precast, it is vital to seal the surface of the stone composition to help prevent immediate precast leaching and water penetration. If not, the precast acts as a sponge, and creates a breeding ground for biological growth. Sealing also closes the pores of the concrete so that water is not able to freeze and thaw creating precast spalling or chipping. |
